MY CONVERSATION WITH THE YOUNG MARXISTS

My conversation with the young Marxists
Who people our American cafés
Suggests the enticing theory persists
That has dug one hundred million graves
The light in their eyes spies Utopia
Once they have stolen the wealth of the rich
'We must free them of their myopia,
If they resist we'll toss them in the ditch!'

At times I imagine I'm sitting in
A bar in Vienna not long ago
Where young scholars spew Trotsky and Lenin
Bright ideas that mass murder would sow
It all sounds so good and well-intentioned
(If the Hell road they pave goes unmentioned.)
