IN MY CONVERSATION WITH YOUNG MARXISTS

In my conversation with young Marxists
Who people our American cafés
I see the seductive theory persists
That's sent a hundred million to graves
The light in their eyes spies Utopia
Once they have stolen the wealth of the rich
"We must free them of their myopia,
If they resist we'll toss them in the ditch!"

At times I imagine I'm sitting in
A Viennese café not long ago
Where young students spewed Trotsky and Lenin
Bright ideas that mass murder would sow
It all sounds so good and well-intentioned
If the Hell Road they pave goes unmentioned.
