Born the day Cornwallis
Capitulated at Yorktown
Reborn the day that Lee
Surrendered at Appomattox.

With the first we established our liberty
From the monarchy of England
With the second we consecrated our Union
Making good our pledge.

You may think me not a poet
You may say I know nothing of rhyming
But even the least charitable among you
Must applaud my sense of timing.
